In 1977 Assembly  elections, he stood against CPM all India Gen.  Secretary Shri EMS Namboodhripad from Alathur, a CPM stronghold.  He lost by just 1999 votes and Shri EMS  publically said Mr.Vijayaraghavan had won though he got more votes.

In 1979 against the backdrop of many cases, Indiraji visited Palghat to attend the state conference of KSU the students wing of Congress.  This was when many other districts had refused to have a rally for Indiraji, due to various problems faced by them.  The rally was the biggest in the district to the president date, and the massive public support she received was a moral booster to Congressmen of Kerala.

In 1980 he was first elected to Parliament from Palakkad.  He was the only Congress M.P. from Malabar region (6districts) and Trichur dist.

In 1979 and 1987 during the statewide agitation against CPM he was brutally assaulted by the police.

I n 1987, he was made the DCC president  by the KPCC to strengthen it, and in the following assembly elections, the dist elected an all time high of Congress MLAs.  The Palakkad DCC was awarded a trophy by the AICC General Secretary Shri G.K.Moopanar for this achievement.
