Cabinet
Committee on Economic Affairs
at its meeting held in
New Delhi
under the Chairmanship of DrManmohan Singh, Hon’ble
Prime Minsiter of India, has approved Coir Board’s
Rs 243 Cr Scheme on Rejuvenation,
Modernization and Technology Up-gradation Scheme of the
Coir Industry.
The Government’s outlay would be Rs 99 Cr which
would constitute 40% of the Scheme outlay. The other 55%
would come in the form of term loans (Rs 132 Cr)
and the beneficiaries are expected to plough in only Rs
12% which works to 5% of the total scheme outlay.
The Scheme would cover 4000 units of spinners and
3200 units of tiny and household. The spinning
units have an outlay of Rs 2 lakh while the
tiny/household units have been provided with an outlay
of Rs 5 lakh each. Around 60,800 workers would be
covered under the Scheme.
The Scheme would augment the existing capacities of the
basic raw material producers and intermediary
manufacturers who would supply their end products to the
finishing units. There is a huge scope for growth, as
exports have been posting an incremental growth of 20%
in volume terms, and even though the gross value term
growth in terms of Rupee value had depreciated, the
value growth in Dollar terms have been very impressive.
The industries off take of
5, 10,000 MT of coir yarn during 2006-7 would be further
supplemented by production of quality raw materials by
these units proposed under the Scheme. The Scheme would
help the workers to enhance their productivity, increase
their wages thereby increasing their standard of living
Coir
Board
is planning to distribute loans to 350 beneficiaries of
spinners and 305 units of tiny/household units with an
outlay of Rs 22.50 Cr within 31 March 2008.
Coir
Board
is also planning a launching ceremony in mid-March and
distribute the loans to select beneficiaries.
Shri A C Jose, Chairman, Coir Board
thanked the Government for sanctioning a exclusive
Scheme for Coir Industry to be implemented by Coir
Board. He felt that the Scheme would spur coir
development in various dimensions and directions.
